Tell us about yourself
Hi, I’m Luther, an international student from Thailand entering my final year in Psychology. I’m passionate about mental health and currently completing a 13-week clinical internship. At Durham, I was LGBTQIA+ rep at Butler, working with the college welfare team. I’m Vice President and President-elect of DU Meditation Society, offering non-judgemental spaces for students to unwind. You may also recognise me from SU socials, where I’ve been a content creator spotlighting underrepresented voices this year.
If elected, what sort of officer would you be?
As Welfare Officer, I’ll be a compassionate and proactive voice for all students. I’ll represent student welfare in University and SU committees, using student feedback to push for meaningful improvements in support services and student experiences. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I believe real change starts with listening and acting on what matters to students. With experience as welfare volunteer, clinical intern, and SU part-time officer, I’ve learned how to listen, connect, and act. I’ve helped spotlight student-led events, raise issues like housing and decolonising education, and I’ll continue building platforms where all students feel heard.
Why is the role important to you?
I believe change must be driven by students, and I’m committed to making sure our voices are central to every decision. This role matters to me because I want to strengthen the connection between students, welfare groups, and the University, ensuring mental health and wellbeing are treated as real priorities, not just words. Navigating university life is challenging, especially for those from minority backgrounds. I know firsthand how isolating it can feel without proper understanding or support. That lived experience motivates me to push for inclusive, compassionate systems that work for everyone. Representation is also powerful, I want to encourage others like me to step into leadership roles, despite the barriers we may face. In a world where political debates often leave us feeling powerless, representation matters more than ever. Our stories, experiences, and needs are valid, and I’m committed to using this platform to advocate for real, student-led change.
What is your pitch to students?
I'm Luther, and I’m running to be your Welfare Officer. With lived experience, a passion for mental health, and a track record of student advocacy, I’m committed to amplifying student voices, raising awareness, pushing for change, and making wellbeing a priority at university.
